COLOR THEORY COURSE

NOTE:  The Interaction of Color course offered in the web site is the complete course.  Because of time constraints, the most outstanding and important studies have been selected for IHA's Studio Art Course.  Consult the "IOC IHA STUDIES CHECKLIST" link for IHA-offered studies and their due dates.  For the course's complete CHECKLIST, the link is "COMPLETE INTERACTION OF COLOR COURSE INDEX & CHECKLIST".

THE MASTERS STUDY

21.  COPY A MASTERPIECE

(IOC REFERENCE: XIX The MASTERS)

21.1.  Note: “To honor the masters creatively is to compete with their attitude rather            than with their results, to follow an artistic understanding of tradition -- that, to create, not to revive.”    By recreating a masterwork, you acknowledge “their selection and presentation of color, their seeing and reading of color -- in other words, their giving a meaning to color.” (IOC XIX The Masters).

21.2.  This study uses Color Aid paper or colored paper torn from magazines.  As closely as possible, let the paper color recreate those in the original painting.  Select your favorite painting created by any pre-mid 20the century master painter.  Examples are Raphael,  Michelangelo, DaVinci, Rembrandt, De la Tour, Le Nain,  Vermeer, Turner,  Manet, Cezanne, Van Gogh,  Monet,  Matisse,  Gauguin, Hopper, or any other truly world class painter.  Do not select a work by an obscure painter.

21.3.  Your work will be simplified to show larger areas of color and their relationships        rather than detail.

21.4.  Reproduce the original as a scan or on a black and white copier.  Make your reproduction the same size as the original and mount then next to one another.

21.5.  The conclusion of the study will demonstrate:

21.5.1.  One study where you have come as closely as possible to the original colors in describing the major hues and forms of the painting.

            21.6.  CHECKLIST - ONE STUDY
