THERE WILL BE A TEST ON THE VOCABULARY, WHICH WILL COVER THE MATERIAL ON MONDAY, 29 JANUARY, 2007 WHEN WE RETURN FROM VACATION.
BACKGROUND FOR NOTRE DAME DE SAINTES:
The Archdiocese of Paris is building a neo-Gothic cathedral called Notre Dame de Saintes. Our Studio art class members are its stained glass window designers! We are charged to design the major stained glass panels featuring women saints using Photoshop. The English word for women saints is written as "saintes" in French. Notre Dame de Saintes means Our Lady of the Saints (female). Before beginning the project, click onto this web site to read information about the evolution of the Gothic cathedral, one of the most important phases in Western architectural development. http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~grempel/courses/wc1/lectures/26cathedral.html

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:
Use online keywords = GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE, GOTHIC CATHEDRAL, GOTHIC:

2. What did Medieval man consider himself to be vis a vis God during both Romanesque and Gothic epochs?

Women or Female Patron saints
STAINED GLASS WINDOW PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS:
GOAL:
Create a stained glass window for Notre Dame de Saintes using a female saint.
PROCESS:
1. Select the saint you want for your stained glass window. Each of you must have a different saint. Visible in the stained glass window must be the symbol of each FEMALE saint. For example, the male Saint Peter carries keys so keys must be used.
2. You are given a stained glass window on this LINK which comes from St. Germain de Pres Romanesque church in Paris's Quartier Latin. Copy it to your school file. Do not change or alter the size as it is the correct size to print. Substitute your original work for ALL white spaces. You will learn to scan, reduce and enlarge, erase, fit shapes to spaces, color, layering, and other aspects of Photoshop as you go along and need them. DO NOT CHANGE OR ALTER THE SIZE OF THE WINDOW BECAUSE IT IS SCALED TO THE CORRECT SIZE FOR PRINTING. USE CONTROL+ TO ENLARGE AREAS TO BE WORKED ON.
2.1. Use original sketches that have been inspired by already existing paintings, sculptures, and stained glass that you have seen.
2.2. IF YOU USE WORK FROM ANOTHER SOURCE YOU MUST SIGNIFICANTLY ALTER IT SO IT IS NOT AN EXAMPLE OF ARTISTIC PLAGIARISM.
3. The individual style of your window can be traditional or abstracted. AESTHETICALLY you must make your idea fit as a whole. You can SPLIT OR STRETCH your image across the 3 portals and 5 upper openings so the entire window artistically works as a complete whole. Keep in mind the Gestalt Theory that "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." Use INTERESTING POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SPACE.
4. When do I work on this? In class! Grab a classmate and work at both computers at the same time so you can feed off of and learn from one another. Work will be at your discretion and interspersed, as you wish, between class projects. As there are only 2 computers and you must work on it in class, rather than at home, you must finish early. 6 people cannot use the same two computers on the night before. Hint, get it done early.
5. Show it to Mrs. Garnes frequently so that you can get design ideas as you did with your curriculum vitae. Part of your grade will include teacher dialogue.
6. What aspects of art do I use? Use the PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN OF EMPHASIS, CONTRAST, UNITY, BALANCE, AND REPETITION) WITH THE ELEMENTS OF ART OF COLOR, TEXTURE, SPACE (POSITIVE & NEGATIVE), VALUE, AND LINE of your project. ORIGINALITY COUNTS!
7. PRINT YOUR FINAL IN TWO FORMS, ONE ON GOOD PAPER AND THE OTHER ON A TRANSPARENCY. TURN IN BOTH VERSIONS on the due date.
DUE DATE: 9 MARCH, 2007.
NOTE: THIS IS A CLASS PROJECT. 10 POINTS WILL BE TAKEN OFF THE TOP OF YOUR GRADE IF, IN THE OPINION OF THE TEACHER, THROUGH WORKING WITH YOU ON PHOTOSHOP AND THE DESIGN, THE MAJORITY STAINED GLASS WINDOW IS NOT CREATED DURING CLASS TIME AND/OR YOU ARE NOT COMMUNICATING WITH THE TEACHER DURING YOUR PROJECT'S DEVELOPMENT.
1. VOCABULARY review and oral discussion on 20 January, 2007. This paper will be turned in and you will receive a one week grade for your oral contributions and written work.
2. STAINED GLASS WINDOW is due any time you are finished with it but FINAL DUE DATE IS 9 MARCH, 2007.
