Unit II: Heroism

  1. Read and analyze a variety of works on the theme of heroism.
  2. Distinguish between epic heroes, celebrities and everyday heroes.
  3. Formulate a definition of the true hero, with consideration given to time period.
  4. Examine the connection between a culture and its heroes.
  5. Assess the validity of a character’s classification as a hero.
  6. Evaluate the way in which a work can be interpreted in two different mediums, with attention to a variety of literary and cinematic techniques.
  7. Articulate the connection between the themes of awareness and heroism.     

Writing

  1. Draft, edit, polish and proofread the analytical essay, with emphasis on creating seamless transitions and superior organization.
  2. Draft, edit, polish, and proofread a formal reaction paper.

 

Quarter III

Literature

Unit I: Tragedy

  1. Read and analyze a variety of works on the theme of tragedy.
  2. Examine the meaning of the term tragedy.
  3. Identify the tragic flaws in the characters central to the works and assess the way in which the characters respond to the tragedies.
  4. Examine the relationships between tragedy and following: the human condition, personal growth, and the time period in which a work was written.
  5. Articulate the connection between and among the themes of awareness, heroism and tragedy.
  6. Evaluate the way in which a work can be interpreted in two different mediums, with attention to a variety of literary and cinematic techniques.

Writing

  1. Draft, edit, polish and proofread the analytical essay.
  2. Prepare a scene of tragedy as a work of visual media.

Grammar

  1. Demonstrate mastery in the use of parallelism.
  2. Demonstrate mastery in the use of clear reference.

 

Quarter IV

Literature

Unit I: Justice

  1. Identify the concepts of justice, social justice, and revenge and their relationship to personal growth.
  2. Analyze films on the theme of justice, while paying attention to the elements of film.
  3. Examine the effect of personal prejudice in achieving justice.
  4. Asses culpability for “crimes against humanity,” specifically the Holocaust.
  5. Compare and contrast “the letter of the law” with “the spirit of the law” and the concept of revenge with that of justice.
  6. Articulate the connection between and among the themes of awareness, heroism and tragedy and justice.

  2. Draft, edit, polish, and proofread the reaction essay.
