Long term homework for Speech Communication:

horizontal rule

Information Speech:

Due:

This is a demonstration speech written in a sequential order. You must be prepared with all elements including your outline, your critique sheet, your notes, your props. Be prepared with a Plan B in case of minor mishaps.

 Persuasion Speech:

Due: ,  This is the first of three (3) persuasion speeches. It will require you to submit an outline based on the original format. However, this will include one of two reasoning patterns: inductive or deductive. The topic must be more appropriate to an audience of Immaculate Heart Academy students than the next two speeches will be. The length of the speech should not exceed five (5) minutes. Your credibility will be based on the fact that you are of the same age and social status of the audience. The subject matter and the length may require larger index cards for the delivery.

see Suggested Topics for Persuasion Speech

Due: May 16th a-Day,  This second persuasion speech will require more research. You must learn statistics, quote respected authorities, be prepared to answer questions…in other words, you must have “done your homework”. This, also, needs an outline using one of the reasoning patterns. Obviously, the topic should be broader than the previous one. Look out  into the community, the county, the state,  the  country. Your credibility needs to be established early on in the speech. Since you are not a noted authority on a subject, it is important that you mention your research, data, and other pertinent information. This speech should be no longer than ten (10) minutes in length and may require typed sheets of paper. Here are my suggestions for that:

  1. Wide margins….narrows your vision
  2. Double-space…makes it easier to find your place
  3. Type size of 14point or over…makes it easier to read when you are nervous
  4. Use key phrases (not entire sentences) to enhance immediate eye contact with the paper.

Due: sign up for the following: May 23rd and 24th for Seniors and June 2nd and June 7th for Juniors/Sophomores.  Remember this is your exam!

This will be your final speech. Its grade is weighted very heavily. As a persuasion speech, it will require research, organization  and proof of credibility. It must, also, include a survey and an interview. They may be done at the same time or you may seek out opposing viewpoints. The survey can be done to establish a profile of the audience or it can be done to support your proposal or to establish a need.

The topic should be broad based but it is not required to be. As in the second of the persuasion speeches, you will probably need typed sheets to use for reference during your delivery. REMEMBER: this one should indicate your development as a speaker. If possible, you will perform these in the auditorium on the stage using visuals and a microphone.
