September, 2010
Dear Parent,
Welcome to those of you who are new to our IHA community! I am most excited about welcoming your 9th grader to the IHA Class of 2014. It will be my pleasure to instruct your daughter in mathematics this year.
My course objectives certainly emphasize knowledge of algebra, so fundamental to successful performance in future math courses as well as the SAT. As we achieve this, I will also be encouraging logical thinking, organizational skills, student responsibility, and a good work ethic. Your daughter can invest as much or as little time as she'd like in accomplishing these goals. To do well, she must be a good reader and listener, react carefully to directions, and give thoughtful analysis to problems presented.
Please refer to my website frequently. Class requirements and procedures are defined in "The Rules of the Game." Note that extra help is always available. Course content, as well as assignments and quiz/test dates, are presented within each version of the "game."
It is not uncommon for grades to fluctuate during the course of the year depending on previous exposure to topics covered. This previous exposure is often quite beneficial but may occasionally present problems as we ask students to make the transition from an 8th grade approach to a higher level approach. I will patiently mentor that transition! Progress reports are sent out at the middle of each marking period. I will send one for any student whose quiz/test grade average is 79 or below. It is in a student's best interest to complete homework assignments and actively participate in class as these grades tend to have a positive impact on her overall marking period average.
Feel free to contact me by phone (201-445-6800X204) or e-mail (LMiller@ihahs.com). Together we can encourage your daughter to reach her potential, which hopefully has become her personal goal.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lauretta Miller
