Checking a Conscious Person - pg. 36-38
- Check scene then person
- Obtain Consent - (May I help you? State name and experience)
- Call 9-1-1 ONLY for life threatening conditions
- Ask person:
What is your name?
What happened?
Where do you feel pain or discomfort?
Do you have allergies?
Do you have medical conditions?
Are you taking any medications?
When did you last eat or drink?
- Check head to toe:
*Remind them not to move the injured body part!*
Temperature
(Neck) Move head from side to side
Shrug Shoulders
Breathe in (Deep breath)
Move shoulders, bend elbows, move wrists and fingers
Move legs, bend knees, move ankles and toes
**Also check for bleeding, medical conditions and signals of pain
- Continue to monitor their ABC's (Airway, Breathing, Circulation)
**Major differences between conscious adult and child check:
- Ask parent/guardian for permission
- Begin with the toes (toe to head check)

- Check scene then check person
- Tap/shake person and ask "Are you ok?!"
- If no response CALL 9-1-1 this person's unconscious!!
- If the person is face down, roll them over
Arm straight (closest to you)
One hand on hip, one hand supporting head and neck
Gently roll person TOWARDS YOU onto their back
- Open airway (tilt head, lift chin) and Check for signs of life for no more than 10 seconds (Count Out loud and look toward their chest!)
- If not breathing, give two rescue breaths
pinch nose and keep airway open
- If begin to breathe, place in recovery position
Put their arm straight that is furthest from you
One hand on hip and one hand supporting head and neck
Gently roll them away from you onto their side (NOT THEIR STOMACH)
AND monitor their ABC's (airway, breathing, and circulation)
- If breaths do go in, but they show no signs of life, quickly scan body for severe bleeding and begin CPR

- Check scene, then check person
- Are you choking?
- Call 9-1-1!! This Person's Choking!!
- Obtain Consent (May I help you? I am trained in Adult CPR)
- Lean person forward and give 5 back blows
One arm across person's chest with your hand resting in person's shoulder
Other hand between shoulder blades (Heel of hand, Open palm)
- 5 abdominal thrust
Find belly button
Make fist with other hand
Place fist above betty button
Thumb-side of fist should be "in" (against persons stomach)
- Continue back blows and abdominal thrusts until:
Object is forced out
Person can breathe of cough forcefully
Person becomes unconscious
*if they become unconscious, treat like an unconscious choking victim*

- Look in book -
*breaths should last 1 second
CPR Adult - pg. 86-87
- Check scene then check person
- Tap/shake person and ask "Are you ok?!"
- If no response CALL 9-1-1 this person's unconscious!!
- If the person is face down, roll them over

30 chest compressions (COUNT OUT LOUD!)
2 breaths
**Continue this cycle until:
Scene becomes unsafe
You find a sing of life
AED is ready to use
You are too exhausted to continue
Another trained responder arrives and takes over

- Check scene then check person
- Tap/shake person and ask "Are you ok?!"
- If no response CALL 9-1-1 this person's unconscious!!
- If the person is face down, roll them over

Gently roll person TOWARDS YOU onto their back
- Open airway (tilt head, lift chin) and Check for signs of life for no more than 10 seconds (Count Out loud and look toward their chest!)
- If not breathing, give two rescue breaths
pinch nose and keep airway open
- If breaths Do Not go in, reposition head (tilt farther back) and try 2 more rescue breaths
- If breaths still Do Not go in, Give 30 chest compressions (remove breathing barrier)
- Check mouth for food
- If no food, give 2 more breaths (to check if airway is clear and breaths will go in yet)
- If breaths still do not do in continue 30 chest compressions
- Check mouth for food
- If food, scoop it out (using 1 finger)
- Give two more rescue breaths (to make sure airway is now clear)
- If breaths:
Do Not go in still: continue 30 chest compressions, check for food and 2 breaths
Do go in: Check for signs of life
OPEN airway!
Lower your face near person's mouth
Look toward chest
Count to 10 Out loud!
*Give care based one conditions found
If breathing, stay with them and monitor A, B, C's
If no signs of life, begin CPR
