HOW TO BECOME A LICENSE DRIVER IN THE STATE OF NJ

EARLY BIRD METHOD

1. Complete the 30 hour driver education theory course. It is offered to you, at no additional charge, at IHA during your Sophomore Physical Education class.

2. Pass the state exam at the end of the course with a score of 80% or better.

3. Receive a card from your teacher that is proof that you passed the written state exam.

4. Once you are 16 years of age and have completed steps 1-3, you can take 6 hours of  “behind the wheel” training. This training is competed with an instructor from a NJ commercial licensed driving school. The instructor will obtain all permits for you from the MVC. At this time you will also schedule your road test.

5. After you have completed “behind the wheel” you will receive your learner’s permit. When driving with this permit you must have a supervising driver as your front seat passenger. A supervising driver is a NJ licensed driver who has been driving for 3 or more years and is 21 or older. Check manual for other restrictions.

6.  When you are 17 and have been driving with a permit for at least 6 months, you can take the road test. Once you have passed the road test you will receive a probationary license. See the NJ MVC manual for probationary license restrictions .

7. When you are 18 and have been driving with a probationary license for at least one year you may receive a full unrestricted license. You must go to motor vehicles to have your license changed to a basic full license. It will not change just because you are 18 years of age.
