Sacraments Course Description

Course Description:

This course presents to the student first an overview of the history and general meaning of sacraments.  It then presents a more focused study on the seven sacraments:  Sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist); Sacraments of healing (Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick); Sacraments at the source of Communion (Matrimony and Holy Orders).

 Course Objectives:

¨       “demonstrate an understanding of concepts underlying the Catholic sacramental vision:  sacramental awareness, grace, symbols, rituals, and prayer.”

¨       “describe the relationships between Jesus, the church, and the seven sacraments.”

¨       “identify major developments in the history of the sacraments in general and of the seven sacraments in particular.”

¨       “show understanding of what realities of human life are celebrated by each of the seven sacraments.”

¨       “identify the major symbols used in each of the seven sacraments and the key aspects of each ritual.”  (Celebrating Sacraments, Teacher Manual, 12)

¨       further develop critical thinking skills so as to deepen awareness, discover compassion, develop responsibility, and act conscientiously;

¨       continue to live out the gospel message of service.
