Course Description:  This course studies the social mission of the Church, the foundations of this mission in scripture and tradition, and the role of the Church in the world                          today.  Special attention is given to the current issues in the world such as respect for life, poverty, discrimination, violence and war.  All issues are looked at with a Christian perspective as center.                                

Course Objectives:      Students will be able to summarize the major documents containing the social teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and of the Bishops of the United States.

                                       Students will be able to Identify and explain the principles that permeate all Catholic Social Teaching.

                                       Students will recognize the teaching of Jesus regarding our relationship to the poor.

                                       Students will examine the Church's position on contemporary issues and how they impact decision we make as Catholics.

Course Requirements: Please bring text to class each time we meet.  Use a folder to hold handout, assignments, assessments, and homework if you do not use your computer.

                                       Class participation is expected - preparation of assigned reading/reflection is essential for the class to be a success.

                                       Tests, project, oral presentations, written reflections/essays will be given throughout each quarter.  Reflection papers and major projects must be typed.

Grading:   Grades will be based on quizzes 40%, tests 40%, projects (test grade), as well as homework 10% and class participation 10%

                  Make up quizzes, tests and assignments.**

                        **missed assignments are due the day you return to school.  If you miss a test or quiz you must schedule to take this the day you return to class.
