Science League Information

General information:  The NJ Science League holds competitions four times a year, on the second Thursday of January, February, March, and April.  Each month's test covers certain specific areas.  IHA has five teams, in Biology I, Biology II, Chemistry I, Chemistry II, and Physics I.  Each team uses 4 members chosen by qualifying test to compete for that month.  Only the top two scores from a team actually count for the final results.  Each test consists of multiple choice questions, to be answered on scantron.  You have 50 minutes to work on the test.  In Chemistry, there are 25 questions; you get a periodic table and a sheet of equations and constants that might be useful.

This year, 2010-2011, due to economic restraints and budget concerns, we will not be following the usual procedure that is described in the paragraph at the bottom of the page.  Instead, we will take the tests at IHA and mail the results in to the central headquarters.  The league is expected to return to the usual format next season.

Specific information: Practices start in December, after Thanksgiving, so you will have time to think about trying out for the team.  To maintain membership, you need to participate in pre-announced practice sessions, held after school.

Practice information - First practice Thurs 12/16, 2:05-2:45 pm.  Second practice will be the week after Christmas break.  Study packets will be available for those who attend practice.

Usual procedure for testing: except for 2010-2011 season

Tests are held at local high schools, with each school in the area taking a turn.  Usually, we leave IHA at 3:15 pm, so that the tests can start by 4:00 pm.  When the test is over at 4:50 pm, students can have some refreshments served by the host school, while teachers grade the tests.  When the local results are known, teachers can share that information with students, and we all go home.  We are usually back at IHA by 5:30 pm.  Students who have their own transportation may meet us at the host school, and may leave as soon as the test is over, if they so wish.
