2.      Discuss the physical and technological aspects of urban life and how they effected the people living there.

3.      Explain the changing complexion of the immigrant population during this period, contrasting the “new” immigrants with the “old.”

4.      Analyze the motives that drove immigration in the late 19th century.

5.      Describe the challenged faced by immigrants and describe the life of the immigrant arriving in U.S.

6.      Describe and evaluate the reaction to the influx of immigrants by business, by labor, and by American society in general.

7.      Trace the changes in the woman’s role in society as employment opportunities expanded.

 

Unit 11: The Progressive Movement

  3. Describe the role of women in progressive reform, identify and describe the activities of important figures associated with the movement.

  4. Evaluate the impact of Progressivism on the role of women in society.

  5. Discuss the women’s suffrage movement, the major figures involved, the contrasting approaches among so-called first, second, and third generation suffragists, and the final attainment of the vote.

  6. Identify and explain significant pieces of Progressive legislation that regulate economic life.

  7. Describe key consumer protections enacted during the era.

  8. Describe the origins of environmentalism during the Progressive Era.

1.      Describe the factors, both national and international, that created a climate favorable to the idea of empire building in the later 19th century.

2.      Explain the economic, social and political arguments that drove an industrial America to look beyond its borders. 

3.      Identify and explain the key factors that  led to tensions between the U.S. and Spain over Cuba and the immediate causes of the Spanish American War.

4.      Assess the role played by Presidents McKinley, Roosevelt and Taft in shaping U.S. foreign policy for the 20th century. 

5.      Recognize and explain the short and long-term impact of U.S. actions on its relations with Latin and South America.

6.      Describe the debate over empire that erupted after the war and the chief arguments of the pro- and anti-imperialist positions.

7.      Explain how imperialism by the major powers and American interests in China led to the “open door” policy.

8.      Describe the circumstances surrounding the U.S. building of the Panama Canal.

9.      Evaluate relations between the U.S. and Japan, noting area of tension relating to immigration and foreign policy.
